We've been trying to eat as many varieties if Chinese cuisines as possible (many of them are simply not available back in the states or they are modified for Western taste too much for my comfort). So last night we went to a Hakka restaurant. Hakka translates to 'guest people' (客人 or Ke-ren in Mandarin). They are a group of Han Chinese that have moved around the country and settled in various provinces over the course of history. The food was really good! We had a simple soup with melon and chicken, pork belly with preserved vegetables, emperors chicken with scallion and finger and a tofu and eggplant dish. For desert we had a red bean and rice pudding. The restaurant accidentally hanged us twice for none item. When we pointed this out to the manager he was more than mortified. It was charming how upset he was.
